What kind of scanners can I use with Sortly?

Sortly gives you several ways to scan inventory, from the camera built into your phone to Bluetooth handheld scanners and rugged enterprise devices. This article explains your options so you can choose the setup that works best for your team.

Ultra, Premium & Enterprise Plans

Mobile app camera (built-in)

This is the easiest option and requires no extra hardware. The Sortly mobile app includes a built-in barcode and QR code scanner that uses your phone's camera.

Open the Sortly app on your iOS or Android device and start scanning right away. This is ideal for fast, everyday inventory tasks.

💡
No scanner hardware? No problem. Your smartphone camera is all you need to get started.

Bluetooth handheld scanner

You can pair a Bluetooth-enabled handheld scanner with your mobile device to use alongside the Sortly app. Once connected and set up with Quick Actions, this setup can significantly speed up repetitive scanning tasks, especially in high-volume or fast-paced environments.

We recommend using a scanner that is reliable, easy to connect, and supports continuous scanning.

Officially supported scanner

The Sortly team has tested and officially approved the following scanner for compatibility:

Alternative models

Many Sortly users have also had success with other Bluetooth scanners. Commonly used models include:

⚠️
While these alternative models have worked for many Sortly users, we cannot guarantee compatibility or provide troubleshooting support for untested third-party devices.

Rugged Android smart scanner

If your team uses rugged smart scanners in a warehouse or in the field, you can install the Sortly app directly onto any smart device running Android 11 or above.

Download the Sortly app from the Google Play Store, sign in, and start scanning just as you would on a standard mobile device. Devices used successfully by customers include:

⚠️
Sortly does not officially support specific rugged scanner models. Compatibility is not guaranteed and we cannot provide troubleshooting support for these devices.

Scanning on the Sortly web app

You can use a Bluetooth handheld scanner with the Sortly web app on your desktop or laptop. However, functionality is more limited compared to the mobile app.

What you can do on the web

  • Search for items by scanning a barcode or QR code.
  • Connect barcodes or QR codes to existing items in your inventory.

What is not supported on the web

  • Checking items in or out via scanning.
  • Creating new items via scanning.
⚠️
You will need to use your keyboard or mouse between scans to confirm actions. Web-based scanning is generally slower and less streamlined than the mobile experience. For the best performance, we recommend using the Sortly mobile app for most scanning tasks.

Frequently asked questions

Which plans support Bluetooth scanner integration?
Bluetooth scanner integration is available on Sortly Ultra, Premium, and Enterprise plans.
Can I use a 1D scanner to scan QR codes?
No. 1D scanners typically only read standard barcodes. To scan QR codes, you need a 2D scanner.
Why does my keyboard disappear when I use a handheld scanner?
By default, a Bluetooth scanner replaces your on-screen keyboard when Bluetooth scanning is enabled. To bring the keyboard back, perform the action on your scanner that activates the keyboard (usually a double tap or multi-tap on the scan trigger). Check your scanner manufacturer's instructions for the exact steps.
Why is my smart scanner using the camera instead of its built-in infrared scanner?
When using the Sortly app on a smart scanner, scanning defaults to the mobile app's built-in scanner, which uses the device's camera. This means your smart scanner needs to have a built-in camera to scan within Sortly.
What Android version do I need for a rugged smart scanner?
Your smart scanner must be running Android 11 or above to install and use the Sortly app.
