Two Ways to Track Consumables
In Sortly, you can track consumables like paint, gravel, fabric, or chemicals in two main ways. The right approach depends on whether you care about total quantity or need to track each item separately.
-
By Quantity or Volume
- Example: Track 550 lbs of Gravel as one inventory item.
- Best when you only need to know how much product you have left overall.
- Works well for bulk consumables measured by weight, volume, or length.
-
By Individual Item (Unique QR Codes)
- Example: Each 55 lb box of Siding has its own unique QR code.
- Lets you scan, move, and track items one by one.
- Best when you need traceability, accountability, or job-level tracking.
How to Decide
- Choose Quantity/Volume if:
✅ You only care about the total amount of material left.
✅ You want to keep your setup simple.
✅ You want to minimize your item count.
- Choose Individual Items if:
✅ Each box, roll, or piece needs its own QR code.
✅ You want to track exactly which item went to which job.
✅ You need compliance or accountability at the item level.
