What is Sortly Labs

Sortly Labs is where you can discover and try experimental features before they are released to everyone. You will find it in the left-hand navigation, marked with a New badge.

Each feature in Labs has its own card showing a name, a short description, and a toggle. Enabling a feature gives you early access, and your feedback helps our product team decide whether it becomes a permanent part of Sortly. New features are added to Labs over time, so check back to see what's currently available to try.

✅ If you already have a Labs feature enabled, nothing changes for you. You keep it exactly as it is.

Who can enable a Labs feature

Only Owners and Admins can turn a Labs feature on or off. Everyone else can still see and explore the Labs page, but instead of a toggle they will see a way to ask for access.

Role Can enable or disable a Labs feature
Owner Yes
Admin Yes
Team Member No, can request access
Custom Role No, can request access
Limited Access No, can request access

Plan and trial differences

Labs is included on every paid plan. It is not available on the Free plan, with one exception explained below. Trial users get the same access as a paid Owner or Admin for as long as the trial is active.

⚠️ If your trial ends without converting to a paid plan, you will lose access to any Labs feature you enabled. You will need to upgrade to get it back.

There is one exception. If you were already on the Free plan and already had a Labs feature enabled before this change, you keep it with no interruption. This is a one-time exception. It does not apply to trial users, and it will not apply going forward.

⚠️ If you are a Free plan user with a Labs feature already enabled and you turn it off, you will not be able to turn it back on without upgrading to a paid plan.

How to enable or disable a Labs feature

If you are an Owner or Admin on a paid plan, you can turn any Labs feature on or off at any time.

  1. 1Go to Labs

Click Labs in the left-hand navigation.

  2. 2Find the feature you want to try

Use Search lab features or browse the feature cards. Click Learn more on any card for more detail.

  3. 3Turn the toggle on

Click the toggle to switch it from Disabled to Enabled. The feature is available right away.

Disabling a feature

Click the toggle again to turn a feature off. You will be asked to share a quick reason why, which helps our product team improve the feature. If a team member had requested access to this feature, disabling it resets their request so they can ask again later.

Requesting access if you are not an Owner or Admin

Team members, custom roles, and limited access users can still explore Labs and ask their account Owner to turn a feature on.

  1. 1Click Request Access

On the feature card, click Request Access.

  2. 2Your account Owner is notified

An email is sent to the account Owner with the feature name, your name, and a link to the Labs page.

  3. 3You will see a confirmation

A message confirms the request was sent, and the button changes to Request Sent to Admin. This applies company-wide, so only one request is active at a time.

You will not get a notification once the feature is turned on. Check back on the Labs page and you will see it enabled on your next visit.

Joining the waitlist

Each Labs feature has a participant cap. Once that cap is reached, the enable or Request Access button is replaced with Join Waitlist. Joining covers your whole company, and any user of any role can join.

🗑️ Joining the waitlist is permanent for now. There is currently no way to remove your company from a waitlist, and your position and the number of people waiting are not shown.

If you are on the Free plan and a feature's waitlist is open, the Join Waitlist button will appear grayed out with a tooltip asking you to upgrade first.

Sharing feedback or requesting a feature

Once a feature is enabled, a Share Feedback button appears on its card. It opens a short form where you can pick an emoji to show how you feel about the feature and leave an optional comment.

Have an idea for something new? Click + Request a Feature at the top of the Labs page. This is open to everyone on any plan, including Free, and opens a short form to submit your idea.

What happens when a feature becomes fully available

When a feature graduates out of Labs and becomes a standard part of Sortly, we email the account Owner of any company on the waitlist to let them know. Access after that point depends on Sortly's plans at the time, so a feature may only be available on certain plan tiers going forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't my team member turn on a Labs feature anymore?
Enabling and disabling Labs features is limited to Owners and Admins. A team member can use Request Access to ask their account Owner to enable it for them.
Did I lose a feature I was already using?
No. If you already had a Labs feature enabled, including on the Free plan, you keep it exactly as it was. This change only affects how new users get in.
I see "Join Waitlist" instead of an enable button. Is something wrong?
Nothing is wrong. That feature has reached its participant cap. Joining the waitlist lets us know there's demand, and your account Owner will be emailed when the feature becomes fully available.
Can I remove my company from a waitlist or see my position?
Not currently. Joining is permanent for now, and your position or the total number waiting is not displayed.
I'm on the Free plan and want to try a Labs feature. What are my options?
Labs is included on paid plans and during a trial. On the Free plan, you would need to upgrade to enable a feature. You can still browse Labs and submit ideas through Request a Feature.
My trial ended and I lost access to a feature I had enabled. Why?
Trial users get full access while the trial is active. If a trial ends without converting to a paid plan, access to any enabled Labs feature ends too, and you would need to upgrade to regain it.
My company urgently needs a feature but the cap is full. What can I do?
Reach out to our support team with your company name and the feature you need. They can look into whether an exception is possible.
